The obligatory “New Year’s Resolution” post

Over break, it seems VH1 has made an attempt to saturate the airwaves with the movie “High Fidelity.” This is fine by me; it’s a great film, and it keeps me horribly occupied, as I cannot turn it off if I see that it’s on. One of the funnier quirks of the main character (played by John Cusack) is a tendency to make top-5 lists of everything imaginable, such as jobs, break-ups, things he loves about a girlfriend, or songs he wants played at his funeral. So, in the spirit of the season, here’s my top-5 list of resolutions for 2008: Read More

Holiday Flix

One of my favorite things to do when I come home for the holidays is to go to the movie theater and watch some movies with my family. We do it pretty much every Christmas break, and this year has been no exception. So far, I have only seen No Country For Old Men and Charlie Wilson’s War. However, both are must-sees. Read More

German language and Backstreet Boys

A friend of mine sent me a note online the other day, reminding me I´ll be home in 5 weeks. Five weeks! That´s really soon…Miriam and I had a victorious moment about a week ago. We suddenly realized – somewhere along the line, we learned how to speak German! We aren´t sure when exactly it happened, or even how exactly, but we are now fully capable of carrying on (slow) conversations with (patient) Germans. Even with the Erasmus (exchange) students who speak good English, we´ve started talking in German more and more. Read More

The Mitchell Report

So if you haven’t heard, the Mitchell report came out today. And if you don’t know what that is, it’s the report put together by Senator George Mitchell that uncovers the apparently vast network of illegal substance use – specifically, performance-enhancing drugs – that has been pervasive throughout Major League Baseball for the last decade. The release of this document reminds me of a question I had at the outset of this investigation: How did this become a Congressional issue? A senator heading up the investigation? Read More

I Remember January 2005…

With all of this talk about an “ICE STORM” (buh buh buhhhh) I think it is appropriate to reminisce about good ole January 2005.It was a day that will live in …. my memory. I had just moved on campus for the duration of the interterm and spring semester. I didn’t really know of the girls living on my hall.My parents and I began moving things into my room in Voth Hall and all day it had been cold and drizzling. The next day everything was absolutely covered in ice. Read More

tribute to wiffleball

Everyone at Bethel knows that wiffleball is the greatest of all intramural sports. This year there are eight intramural wiffleball teams at Bethel, which means that there are upwards of 75 students particpating! With the tournament coming up this week I thought I would take a moment to write a brief tribute to this sport of all sports. Read More

Thanksgiving in Germany

I was all ready to have a quiet, almost non-existent Thanksgiving this year, but then everything changed. Read More

Happy Holidays – Cherish them

Yeah it sounds sappy, and we always hear it said, but seriously, find time to rest this Thanksgiving break. Hopefully you will be returning home or at least spending the holiday with familiy members. If this is the case, sit back, chill out, and try to appreciate your time with them. I will be the first to admit that it can be much too easy to let your stress (from school or elsewhere) to get the better of you and act, let’s say, less than perfect, with your family or friends. where have I been?

Dear readers,I know that you are out there and I know that you are many in number. Probably you read this section of our blog in expectation of gleaning great insight into the world of Bethel College Admissions. However, once again I am going to spare you the sordid details of my working life and focus on one or two highlights of the current fall semester.Travel: This is one of the best parts of my job! For the last 1.5 months or so I have been on the road (not Jack Kerouac style–I get to drive my own vehicle and I avoid mind-altering substances). Did you know that Kansas is really beautiful? This is a discovery that I continually make as I drive to various high schools and college fairs during the fall. Read More

German wares

Obviously being in Germany means making do with different day-to-day items and brands than I’m used to. For example, when I crave pickle relish, I have to buy pickles and cut them up and add the onion myself. And for some strange reason, I really miss my Lady Speed Stick Wild Freesia scented deodorant. Grocery stores generally don’t have as wide a selection as American stores. At first I assumed this would be a huge annoyance, but at the moment…I can’t for the life of me figure out why the soup products at Dillon’s take up an entire half isle, when you can fit everything you need onto a few shelves.
