Campus Life

Fall at Bethel

BC service day 102313 009

Leah and Danny

Life has become crazy on Bethel Campus! Where to start… First, I went to Camp Mennoscah for service day. This was a great trip! I went with a very diverse group: Leah Towle, who had never been to Camp Mennoscah before, Jared Regehr and Megan Siebert, my fellow staffers from this summer, and a few other great individuals with varying degrees of familiarity with Camp Mennoscah. We left Bethel at 8am and (mostly) stayed awake for the ride out. When we got to Camp Mennoscah we started working in the Bluestem house.

The whole crew!

We scraped floors, swept floors, mopped floors, dusted furniture, cleaned bathrooms, took out recycling, and much much more. The day also included an awesome lunch and some time to check out the Ninnescah River.

Another series of events happening in my life are the many activities of the Bethel College Concert Choir. We sang at Faith Mennonite, BCMC, and Tabor Mennonite Church within the past few months. Just yesterday we sang at the President’s Club dinner. This semester has been my first experience of being in the Bethel College Concert Choir. I feel very blessed to have this opportunity to sing with all of the amazing people in the choir!

This past week we also celebrated Halloween. The weekend before was the Halloween dance, which was quite fun! But, this past Thursday it was our turn to make Halloween fun for someone else! Bethel hosted trick-or-treat-off-the-streets. We had many young children come to our door for some goodies. We saw a wide range of costumes, from an out-house, to a sock monkey, to twin Cleopatra’s. Here is one of the Cleopatra’s with his three daughters and me. As you can see, I did not dress up as anything special. However, Katelyn Melgren did my hair in a “Princess Leia” fashion so I could almost claim I was from Star Wars.

The last project that has been keeping me busy is organizing the Bethel Blood Drive. As a co-leader of SCAN, my specific project is to run the blood drive that Bethel hosts once a semester. So, for the past two weeks, I have been sitting outside of the caf, asking people to donate blood. So far, Bethel has shown up! The blood drive is this Tuesday, November, 5th, so it is quickly approaching.

Halloween Festivities

This past week has been full of Halloween festivities. Last weekend was the weekend Halloween dance and costume contest in Memorial Hall.

Prior to the dance, my mod and some additional friends went to a pumpkin patch where we did many fun things including playing in a “corn pit” (like sand just with corn kernels) and making a train down a long slide After we had our fun at the pumpkin patch we went to one of my modmates houses to carve pumpkins and have dinner. We had a wonderful time and after we were all full of good food and good conversation we headed back to Bethel so that we could get ready for the Halloween dance and costume contest!

At the dance, this years contest in my opinion was the most creative of my Bethel career yet. We had Zipperfaced Zombies, the Disney movie Aladdin cast, a rainbow with a pot of gold (my mod + Bree), Miley Cyrus, Mario Kart characters, and many many more. The dance ended this weekend of fun.

However, the Halloween fun wasn’t over yet! On alloween day, our mod participated in “trick-or-treat off the

street.” This is where the mods or rooms that want to participate have a pumpkin decoration outside of their door and people from the community can come to campus to trick-or-treat. Whoever has the pumpkin by there door has candy! My mod decorated our door and played Halloween music out into the courtyard for the occasion. It was so much fun to see all the kids in their costumes!

So to summarize, it was a great week full of fun and festivities, but now it is back to the books for me!

Fall Break: Where Has The Time Gone?

I titled my last blog “The Days Go Slow, The Weeks Go Fast…” Again, this couldn’t be more accurate. Not only was I thinking this about Fall Break which has only one more day before school starts up again, but also the fact that our first semester of this school year is already half over!

To recap on this semester so far:

Fun with my mod: Celebrating birthdays, mod movie nights, playing games watching New Girl and Grey’s Anatomy, painting nails and more!

Carnival On The Green: The fun beginning of the school year event with lots of games, foods and prizes! This is where I got three of my Bethel T-shirts, the majority of my plastic dinnerware and my large stash of Kool-Aid Jammers:)

Football/Soccer/Volleyball/Softball Games: Getting to watch and support all of the sports who have games going on in the fall! Also since I am a part of the tennis team we have been helping with the football concession stands which is a lot of work but fun as well!

Tennis Tournaments: We had a few tennis matches this fall even though Tabor_Quad_Photoour actual season isn’t until the spring. It felt like a pretty successful year and we ended it with the ITA which is our regional individual tournament. The individual winners of men’s and women’s singles and doubles get to go to nationals. We had several people in both singles and doubles make it to the quarterfinals and one person make it to the semi’s so it was a very successful tournament!

Taste of Newton: Walking down Main Street there was delicious food, wonderful company, good music and entertainment and more delicious food! (Verenike, bierocks, apple dumplings with ice cream, cherry limeades and more!)

Fall Fest: Chilly weather, friends and family, lots of booths, lots of food including more verenike:), trinkets, photo booth, the play, a volleyball game a football game and more!

What to look forward to:

Fall weather: The weather cooling down, sweatshirts and extra blankets

Fall colors: The leaves changing to beautiful oranges, reds and yellows that are worthy of many pictures.

Bethel Basketball: Watching and cheering on our Men’s and Women’s teams this year!

KU Basketball: Every year during KU basketball season I go home to Hesston watch as many of the games as I can with my parents, sister and Weaver uncles, aunts, cousins and grandparents. I also bring whoever of my friends and modmates want to come as well!

Thanksgiving Break: Another break from school, delicious food and good quality time with my family!

Christmas Break: The biggest break from schoolwork:), family, friends, “Christmas goodies” (chocolates, baked goods), hot chocolate, snow, snowmen, presents, lots of family time!

Interterm: Europe: The Concert Choir gets to go on a trip to Europe including Poland, Germany and the Netherlands! We will be gone for three weeks, singing and sightseeing and I can’t wait!

Learning the Ropes

Hi all,

Allow me to give you a little background information about myself.

In West Philadelphia born and raised, on the playground is where I spent most of my days. Chillin’ out, maxin’, relaxin’ all cool and all, shootin some b-ball outside of the school..

Just kidding.

🙂

My name is Baylee Teach. I am freshman softball player here at Bethel this year. I graduated from Halstead High, which is about ten minutes from Bethel. I plan on majoring in Secondary Education with my focus in history.

It has taken me forever to write my first post because I have been so incredibly busy. Moving to college is a huge adjustment and it has taken me until now to finally feel like I have a grip on what’s going on. At times I have felt extremely overwhelmed but I’ve found that random dance sessions and coffee breaks help. I hope everything is going well for you all!sb

Fall Fest Craziness!!!!!

It’s that time of year, where apparently, everyone at Bethel goes into mass craziness. With me being new to Bethel, this is a new experience that I am excited to see unfold. I have heard from several different sources around campus, that this week is the busiest, and craziest, but also the funnest and will be one of the best out of the year.

Quite the oxymoron there huh?

Of the clubs and organizations that I am involved in on campus, we have spent about a month planning what we are going to do at Fall Fest. If every club and organization has done the same, I’m sure the results are going to be phenomenal! I honestly can’t wait to walk around to various booths to see what others have put together for their display. That is, given I have enough time between my other Fall Fest obligations and responsibilities.

As far as what my most favorite event is, I’m going to have to say the football game. I say that, because I love watching football, and cheering for my team (Which is OBVIOUSLY Bethel) but also because I don’t fully know what to expect or anticipate at Fall Fest. But that’s half of the excitement…..not knowing. So far, every other Bethel tradition that I have experienced, has been absolutely wonderful, and I am looking forward to Fall Fest….craziness included!

BC: Senior Edition

Me with my roommate/friend from freshman year. We're finally seniors!

Me (left) with my roommate/friend, Jennifer (right) from freshman year. We’re finally seniors!

I can’t believe it is so, but alas this is my fourth and final year at Bethel College! The years have flown by, I know we hear that all the time, but until now I didn’t realize just how fast my time here has gone.

I’ll give you a brief recap of my past 3 years at BC. I’ve been a member of the women’s basketball team and am currently in my fourth season. I’ve also been a writer for the Collegian (our student-run newspaper), transitioned to a sports editor, now I serve as the advertising manager. I’ve also expanded the clubs I’m involved in from FCA, to Femcore, Multicultural Student Union, and Photography club, and the Collegian.

I’ve been extremely impressed at the progress BC has made in the amount of diversity on campus, the cafeteria has improved so much you wouldn’t believe it, and the aesthetic appeal of this campus has been phenomenal.

Not only have I been involved in a multitude of organizations, but I’ve made an enormous amount of new friends. Joining those groups and being in classes with a variety of other people has provided some great experiences and lasting friendships.

I wouldn’t trade my time at Bethel for anything, I’ve grown as a person spiritually, intellectually, and physically (thanks to basketball). It’s been a great experience so far and I doubt my senior year will disappoint.

I look forward to this final year and the new adventures that it has in store for me!

Football wins at home!!

This is my third year at Bethel and (correct me if I’m wrong) I have never left the Bethel football stadium with that winning high. Actually, I don’t think I have ever experienced a Bethel College football win! This is not to say they have not won during the past two years, just that I have not been at the games they have won. So, last night I went to the game with my normal feelings of “I really have high hopes for this year, but also don’t want to be disappointed again.” I arrived at the student section to find it was mostly full of non-students, so I found a seat and awkwardly kept standing, because I was going to stand for the beginning of this game! As students kept arriving we kept packing people into the small amount reserved for us. I don’t think I have ever seen that many students packed into about three rows of benches! But, we were there; Bethel fans were ready to support their football team!

I saw so many great passes and catches during the game and just great offense and defense in general. I will admit when the other team scored first I got a little nervous, but we came back! I also got a scare when the other team scored a touch down with 4 seconds left to the half… but in the end BETHEL PULLED OUT THE WIN!!! They won 41 to 24! As I said, I have never experienced

fb group

the feeling of a football win… it was worth the wait! Watching all the players celebrate that win was awesome! I even saw the coaches get into it!

Here is the Bethel football team celebrating the win. After they shook the hands of the other team and prayed together, they came over to the stands and included us in their celebrations! They did a cool, new chant together and then walked out to the field for celebrations with all their friends and family who came to support them!

fans! This is a picture of just some of the amazing fans that the Bethel football team had last night! Thanks to Lina Adame for letting me use her picture. I would also like to thank the half time entertainment we had! Not sure whose children were up in the press box ( I have heard either the Chalashtari’s or Coach Marble’s) but I greatly enjoyed their random noises! Speaking of Coach Marble, I would also like to give a shout out to the volleyball team and their two wins this weekend! I was very impressed with the talent and team work of their team! Bethel athletics is off to a great start!

The Days Go Slow, The Weeks Go Fast…

Well here we are again, summer is over, classes have started, and the first week has already come and gone! Last week some of my friends and I had been talking about the saying of how: “the days go slow but the weeks go fast.” Now that we are already into our second week of classes I can attest to how true this feels to me.

I was a blogger for Bethel last year as well, but for those readers who are new to the Bethel Blog I will introduce myself again. My name is Madelyn Weaver, I am from Hesston, KS, a mere seven miles away from the Bethel campus. I am a Junior majoring in Social Work with a minor in Management. I am involved in many activities on campus including: Tennis, Concert Choir, Women’s Chorus, Student Senate, SAA (Student Alumni Association) , SCAN (Student Community Action Network) and the Student Social Work Organization.

Being involved in all of these different activities including the obvious responsibility of classes, you could say I have been keeping pretty busy, thus the feeling of the weeks moving so rapidly. It has not been all work and no play however, because I live in a wonderful mod with some wonderful girls who love taking breaks together from all the reading and homework we have:).

Tennis2

Left: Me; Right: Miranda

One thing that will be new for me this year is being at Bethel without my sister, Miranda. Miranda is two years older than I, she also attended Bethel College and graduated with a degree in Social Work. It was so special to be able to attend school with her, to be a part of the tennis team together and to sing in the choir together, I was truly blessed to have her as a huge part of my Bethel career the past two years! Although she is no longer a part of my Bethel experience, she and her husband now live in Newton, KS and she will continue to come and support the tennis team and choir by cheering and attending concerts.

On a lighter note, the start of this school year has already been so great, I am looking forward to the rest of the year and all the great memories that will be made in every aspect of my Bethel experience!

Well that’s all for now, I welcome all new students, faculty and blog-readers!

Until next time,

Madelyn Weaver

From Camp Mennoscah to Bethel

Hello all! My name is Melinda Regehr. I am a junior here at Bethel and am majoring in Social work with a minor in Psychology. I am involved in many things here on campus, like SAA, SAC, and SCAN… or I just liked how those words looked on here, you can decide for yourself. I work in Admissions and Student life and am now writing for this lovely blog! I also volunteer at Western District Conference Library for my service learning scholarship.

Lastly, I like to keep myself busy with going to Applebees for half price apps, going to Druber’s (not really for the donuts, but for the Uno Blitz playing), hanging out with friends, and of course studying! Sometimes I sleep, but only when I have nothing else to do.

Since I have only been at Bethel for a week, I will tell you what I have been doing for the past few months. I was on summer staff at Camp Mennoscah as the office assistant. What did this include?? Well, many things. I ordered pictures, made address sheets, ordered bunches and bunches of pizza every Friday, I swam in flour and water, saw someone eat an enormous, squirming grasshopper, I spent many hours with some amazing staff, and I spent many hours with

992785_10151646190079917_1909773171_n

some really amazing kids. I did all this and at the same time had time to find God in my life. It’s amazing how hard it is to make time for God in my life at school, but so easy to find God in all the running around at camp. This picture is of all of the Camp Mennoscah summer staff. We are some stunning Doctors!

Since I was at Camp from June-August, I really did not do much else. I went to a few weddings and that’s about all. This picture is from Aaron & Rachel Rudeen’s wedding. The girl next to me is Katelyn Melgren… nothing else needs to be said.

alli and alyssa

Just in case you are wondering who I live with… here are some of them. Yes, it is quite the adventure! My mod is full of tennis players, singers, writers, Music majors, Education majors, Social work majors, and I think even a Biology major. I am very excited to live with these amazing people and even more excited for this year in general!

From Summer to School

Hello! My name is Michelle Unruh. I’m a junior from Goessel, Kansas studying music education. I am pretty involved at Bethel, which keeps me very busy. I’m involved in many musical ensembles on campus. I play bass clarinet in the wind ensemble. I also am an alto in the Concert Choir and Woven, Bethel’s student-led women’s a capella ensemble. I also enjoy taking piano and organ lessons. This year, I am also directing a choir at a church in the area, which I am really looking forward to!

I just finished my second summer in a row at Camp Friedenswald in Cassopolis, Michigan. Last year, I was on rotational staff and worked as a counselor, maintenance, and in the kitchen. I really enjoyed my summer, so I decided to go back for a second summer. This past summer, I spent ten weeks on the leadership staff. I was on the worship team and played guitar for Campfire and Quest, our morning worship time. I also helped to plan skits, devotions that each cabin used daily, and the summer’s theme, Rooted and Growing (Ephesians 3:16-17). In my spare time, I enjoyed leading activities such as Greased Watermelon or Whipped Cream Whiffleball, taking campers on pontoon rides on Lake Shavehead, going on hikes in the Peaceful Woods, or just relaxing on the beach. I had fun getting to know the other staffers as well as the campers that came to Camp Friedenswald. Being at camp was quite exhausting at times, but it was such a rewarding summer job. This was definitely a summer to remember!

I’m so excited for this semester! I have finished my general education courses, and I’m really enjoying all of the music and education classes that I am enrolled in. We’re halfway through our first week of classes, and the homework, assignments, and projects are starting to pile up. I had a really great summer working at Camp Friedenswald, but it is so good to be back at Bethel College with my fellow Threshers. I’m excited to see what this semester has in store for us!
