My Last, First Day as a Student

Hi! My name is Kristin Unruh. I am a senior here at Bethel, majoring in Elementary Education and receiving a Special Education endorsement. I have always had a heart for working with children and I come from a family of teachers, so it wasn’t a surprise to my family and friends when I decided to major in Elementary Education. Throughout college, I have been involved in Women’s Chorus, Wind Ensemble, Concert Choir, College Buddies participant and now coordinator, Student Activities Committee, Student Alumni Association, and the Student Ambassador program.

I come from a small town called Goessel, which is located only 15 minutes away from Bethel. Many people wonder why I don’t live at home, since home is so close. For me, living at home during college was not really something I even considered. I’m so thankful that I live on campus, because if I lived at home, I would miss out on so many of the activties and the late night bonding with friends that happens in the dorms. I live in Warkentin Court, which is also known as the Mods. In my mod, there are eight other incredible women (nine of us total) who make me laugh all the time, inspire me, challenge me, comfort me during struggles, and rejoice with me during happy times. I can’t imagine my college years without these ladies. (**Attached is a photo of my mod in spring last year at Bubbert’s Awards. I am third from the right.)

Why I came to Bethel College: Many of my family members attended Bethel, my father works here, and I had already been attending Bethel music and sports camps/events while in high school, so I was encouraged to at least come for a campus visit. I’m glad I did! Four years ago, as a prospective student, I loved the education program and how the students have placements in the local schools for hands-on learning. I was also very impressed by the large, powerful sound of the Concert Choir. Four years later, I’m singing in that very choir and almost done with the education program. I’m SO glad I chose Bethel!

As the title of this post states, today was my last, first day as a student. It’s crazy to think that after so many years of schooling, I will never have another first day as a student. However, since I will soon be a teacher, I’m happy to say that all my first days of school from now on will be a little bit different. I started my day off with an 8:00 AM Psychologial Foundations of Education class, followed by donuts and coffee provided by the Student Life office. At noon, I had Concert Choir and this evening, I will have Small Metals & Jewelry, a class that I’m really looking forward to! It’s been a great last, first day as a student and I’m pumped to see what this year has in store!
